WHY?
The stated purpose of the Marineland Right Whale Project is:
"to monitor and conserve the endangered North Atlantic right whale for this generation and the next.”
But wait! There’s more!
While we study whales and whale behavior, it’s actually human behavior that we wish to address. Historically, humans have killed right whales, almost to extinction. Currently, humans kill and injure right whales via ship strikes and entanglement in fishing gear, and a number of secondary impacts. Vigorous efforts are underway to reduce these impacts, with the aim of a healthy and growing right whale population, and the successful co-existence of whales and humans in our ocean environment.
