Ways Volunteers Can Participate
Volunteers can participate in three types of surveys to help monitor North Atlantic right whales along our coast.

Mobile Survey Teams
A group of volunteers who travel together to a series of designated shoreline lookout locations, scanning the ocean to locate whales and report sightings. Teams typically volunteer one morning per week.

Community Survey Teams
A group of volunteers who observe the ocean from a fixed location, such as an oceanside condo or community lookout, scanning for whales and reporting sightings without moving between survey points.

Causal Observers
Beachgoers and oceanfront residents can participate as casual observers by learning to identify North Atlantic right whales and reporting sightings from the beach or from home.

New Community/Team Leader
If your community is not listed above, you may be able to start a new Community Survey Team. In order to do so you must be willing to serve as the new location's Team Leader. The Team Leader is responsible for recruiting and coordinating volunteers from your community and coordinating observations and communication with the Marineland Right Whale Project. If you're interested in this option, please contact us at [email protected] with your community's name, address, and potential number of volunteers in the new location. If you cannot commit to leading a new Community Group, please consider becoming a Casual Observer and encouraging your community members to join you. In time you may develop enough interest and support to create a formal Community Group.

Casual Observer
Beachgoers and oceanfront residents can participate as casual observers by learning to identify North Atlantic right whales and reporting sightings from the beach or from home. Learn about the characteristics of a North Atlantic right whale from the RIGHT WHALES tab on our website, keep your eyes on the ocean, and call the hotline at 888-979-4253 (888-97-WHALE) when you see one!
