YOUR CALL TO THE HOTLINE TRIGGERS ACTION! When you call the hotline and we are notified that there is a potential sighting in the area, we'll send out a team member to confirm that it's a Right Whale. If it is, the Project will deploy a response team with experienced colleagues and team members, cameras and GPS units. Photo-documentation and data on movements and behavior are recorded. Teams track the whales as long as possible, sometimes for the entire day.
In addition, the FWC will initiate its Early Warning System and Communication Network which will alert commercial and federal mariners to the presence of the whales so that can slow down or alter their course to avoid injuring, or fatally striking, the whales. This is especially important during calving season when baby whales are not experienced or fast enough to avoid collisions with vessels.
